Talk to me about D&D, pbta hacks, and what you love in the one that isn't in the other. Or vice versa.
Why: For the last 6 weeks, I've been writing and playtesting a pbta hack that is my love letter to D&D. As Dungeon World is to Dungeon Magazine, this is meant to be to Dragon Magazine.

My favorite things from D&D and its children have included:
ReplyDelete1. critical hits
2. d12 damage and hit dice
3,. omg fireball omg. But, really? Prismatic orb as cast by a 9th level battle mage.
4. Yes, I just healed all your hit points with a cure light wounds. Why wouldn't that happen?
Things I've disliked:
1. Accountancy at a more nuanced level than I care about.
2. rolling a 1 on a d12, or a d20.
3. Perception of bell curve when, really, there's a uniform distribution.
Basically, for me, D&D is often about power fantasies.
What about you?
I love the puzzle solving through interaction with the environment (not just spot checks). I LOVE declaration of intent of action before initiative then resolve.
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of managing my spell resources and the downtime cost to recover those resources.
Jeremy Friesen What do you love about managing resources?
ReplyDeleteWilliam Nichols I like planning how I would use the spells. Both from a holistic coverage of possibilities as well as in the moment positioning. Vancian magic is what makes this feasible.
