A delightfully touristy day in SF. Took the cable car, found ourselves at Ghirardelli. Asyr free chocolate, day on the beach. Took the car back. Had fantastic sushi, beers at two good bars.

Not bad for our first day out. Now, tone to find breakfast, tourist some more, and get to the airport by before 6.

Pretty sure my first RPG bit for pay did not get bought.

Pretty sure my first RPG bit for pay did not get bought.

That ... means I still own it and can develop it.

First outside run in six months?

First outside run in six months?

I am breathless, in so many ways.

With the discussion on prep in RPGs winding down, a new question very much entered my wind.

With the discussion on prep in RPGs winding down, a new question very much entered my wind.

As per the previous, I am looking for what other people think and will start with my own view.

Question: What is considered true within an RPG?

My short answer: Only what happens at the table. GM Secrets, player secrets, etc are only true if they are witnessed at the table.

Longer Answer:
I've developed an empiricists view of these things. The fiction is the thing, and the only things true are what we say are true at the table. Everything else is undefined.

The game is a shared fiction. You can write up 5,000 words on your character backstory and history, but if it doesn't come up in game that it is not true. It isn't false either; it is null.

I've been guilty of this; I've written thousands of words about how a character got here, detailing history and dealings and blah blah blah. And that can be fun; writing is a thing. You can be a writer.

I'll go a step further; if you want to write, then write

But, writing is inherently not the same as participating in a game. The Game exists between the participants; no one owns it. And no one really owns the experience of a particular character, just how that character reacts to situations presented in the game.

Those secrets, those pages, those ideas that are held to ones self? They aren't the game. And they are only true in the game if they are revealed at the table. Oh, your elf is a princess? AWESOME. oh, your elf is a princess in your mind but nothing you've ever done or alluded to says the elf is a princess? Sorry, no.

That elf ain't a princess, because you have failed to show it.

Also, very similarly, the GM's plans, ideas, traps and issues? Those also do not exist until they are portrayed. Prep isn't canon, fronts aren't canon. The only thing that is canon is the table.

That's my view; the only thing that is canon is the shared experience between the players.

I am open to being convinced of the opposite. I've a feeling only the GM-referenced part will be particularly controversial.

Novel: The Best Of All Possible Worlds

Novel: The Best Of All Possible Worlds
Author: Karen Lord
Rating: 1 of 5
Spoiler-free synopsis: A branch of humanity must consider what is most relevant to their culture after a disaster.

SPOILER filled review:
This book is not for me, and I'm struggling to put my finger on why.

This is the second time I tried to read it. The first time, I kept falling asleep. This also happened the second time, but it got better after 100 pages.

Quite a bit, but not enough. There was finally a little action: our protagonist encountered a domestic abuse situation, and we see the aftermath. then, it was back to geography and moving from one culture to another.

I've never liked books that move from place to place. Pratchett's worst novels are the Rincewind novels, and largely -- to me -- because he travels around. I don't want books about travel. I want books about people, and I want to care about the characters.

I never did. This was partially the names, which I found hard to wrap my brain around. This may be cultural, as these are largely non-western names. I didn't care about any of the characters.

Most of the way through, there is a problem that none of our characters can solve. So, they duex ex machina a solution involving time travel and future technology. It was pointed to earlier, but seemed unlikely.

Even the ending seemed flat; our protagonist finds out her beloved wants to marry her through bureaucracy. They get married. They live happily ever after.

Public gaming post, looking for feedback.

Public gaming post, looking for feedback.

Primary question: If RPGs involve puzzles and investigation, to what extent is the GM responsible to figure that out in prep?

My short position is: Not at all. Prep as necessary work should be minimized.

Longer version: It depends.

That is, there are absolutely games that need things figured out in advance. I see this in a lot of larps, and in games with heavy system that the GM needs to figure out. I wouldn't try to run DnD without figuring out a bunch of the monsters and traps and whatever in advance.

But, in a lot of circumstances, I view that as a bug rather than a feature. That is, if I have to do hours of work to run a game, then the system is not valuing my time. Part of the job of an RPG system is to let us play a game; work and prep that I need to do are failings of the system. That is, part of game design is creating quick, easy to use tools for GMs and players alike.

I see this in various forms in basically all pbta games. Wrestling includes a "quick start", and says for the GM to figure out matches and such during a 10 minute bio break after the characters are introduced. Urban Shadows has this in the rumor mechanic; Apocalypse World (of course) has it with the Hardholder and Operator's start of session moves. Heck, AW2e basically has "pay upkeep or the GM makes a move" as a start of session move.

Compare to gumshoe, for example. We've got a game of Night's Black Agents, which is sort of spy competence porn with Vampires. I like a lot of things about this game; I adore the idea that Dracula was a redacted after action report. That's a great starting point. The GM has read a tome, which includes a few ways everything could go and is much longer than the Dracula novel. The rule book is huge, and the character sheet contained no directions. I helped rewrite it to make character creation quicker.

With the exception of the character sheet, none of this is meant as a bad thing; it is a different style than my preferred. This game stresses knowledge of a preexisting game world, and the expenditure of points to overcome obstacles. There's a lot of knowledge transfer. Instead of stressing improv, it stresses knowledge.

I feel like I could do spy competence porn with vampires without all that; that a pbta hack could get to about the same game play experience without an entire session on character creation and the necessity of reading Dracula. I have absolutely not written this, and don't plan to. But, much as Dungeon World does DnD without nearly as much prep, I feel like there's a way to do NBA without the tome.

That is: I want RPGs design to make playing the game as simple as possible. To stress the experience at the table, and to not rely on GMs and players to do work away from the table.

Am I right, or is there something important I'm missing?

I'm starting a collection for my thoughts on RPGs.

I'm starting a collection for my thoughts on RPGs.

I was never on The Forge, and don't have that culture. I will be looking for thoughts, feedback, and expansion of my gaming vocabulary.

Your thoughts are important for this to be useful. I want to hear from you. Tell me when I'm wrong. Tell me when you disagree. Tell me when I think I'm insightful but am really just stupid. And, of course, agreement is also welcome.

editing with some ground rules:
-- No one's experience is lesser than others.
-- Go for authenticity, not invalidation of others views.
-- Most importantly: the people involved are more important than the ideas.

Let's try to remember that. If there's jerky and I miss it, please tell me so I can do some modding.

La Fin Du Misérable: an economic fan fic.

La Fin Du Misérable: an economic fan fic.

Volume 1: Fantine
In 2110 or so, Fantine is in love with Felix. He leaves her after she becomes pregnant with her daughter, Cosette. This is not the first time Felix has done this, nor will it be the last. Thanks to the work of Myriel, she has access to a minimum basic income and is able to stay afloat. Poor Fantine has prenatal vitamins while she is with child, and is under a doctor's care when Cosette arrives.

Felix is out of her life, a dead beat dad. And an asshole. And good riddance; she realizes he is not a good influence. For the first few years, she lives solely on the minimum basic income, as she finishes her education and raises her daughter. This is not a glamorous life, but she is able to keep herself and her daughter well. Fantine achieves an engineering degree in organizational efficiency.

Apparently I am writing La Fin Du Misérable: an economic fan fic.

Apparently I am writing La Fin Du Misérable: an economic fan fic.

Short version: In a world where Myriel convinces Napoleon to end poverty ...
-- Fantine stays afloat after Felix leaves her. She has access to medicine and doctors while pregnant, and using the minimum basic income to stay afloat.
-- Jean valjean leaves prison with 10 years of income in an account, rather than being desperate and poor.
-- Thenardiers are still assholes.
-- Marius and his friends of the ABC live on the minimum basic income while teaching the poor to read.

I need a better way to work in the Thenardiers, still. But, as has been pointed out, any more than this is for fun rather than to make a point.

And, well, I've got a few paragraphs. Because it is super fun to write fan fic, apparently.

Because this has come up, a political post!

Because this has come up, a political post!

Some things I believe, and could have discussions regarding:

The first few are things we should do:
1. A minimum basic income to eliminate poverty without reducing the desire to produce wealth. That is, a major philosophical objection to government assistance is that it reduces the incentive to work. A MBI effectively gets around that, as living at the poverty line isn't fun. And if you do want to, more power to you. This also means you suddenly don't have nearly the same need for a minimum wage or a host of other economic controls. It also empowers women.

2. Single payer health care eliminates the major source of bankruptcies, and pools risk. Pooling risk is what government is all about.

3. Gaming is a Good Thing that can build empathy and make us better people.

4. Education should be free.  Student loans are bad.

Some government I think we could do with less of:
I. federal controls on wages (but not until a MBI is accomplished)
II. military
III. prisons, drug laws, and other ways we create a preschool to prison pipeline.

Some odd thoughts:
A. Lawyers, accountants, federal employees, stock brokers, and a bunch of other categories of employment are effectively societal overhead. Ideally, these would not exist. Note: my job is also societal overhead that ideally would not exist.

B. The world could be a much less violent place if we reached out with money and chocolate and MREs rather than hellfire missiles.

C. Government rules and laws should be as simple as possible, but no simpler. making laws more complicated in inherently undemocratic, disenfranchising, and probably exists to shield a privileged class.

These are things I believe, and are all open to debate, ridicule, and modification if there is a good argument to the contrary.

In fact, I welcome such debate. As hard as belief revision is, it is the only way we get closer to truth.

You guys ...

You guys ...

This hack just made a turn for the serious.

Which hack? Fullest House

I realized what its really about: an extended family pushing away dealing with loss while the adult struggle to raise the kids, and the kids try to be happy.

Adding question to playbooks such that:

The Parent
Gender: Man, woman, ambiguous, transgressing, or concealed
Who did you lose? Ask your cousin.
How were they lost? Ask your best friend
How do you cope: coke, cleaning, popularity, music, comedy, investmens, netflix

That is, the parent chooses their gender. The Cousin explains who was lost, and the best friend tells us how. Everyone is a suffers, and no one is really in control of themselves or the situation they find themselves in.

Each character has a means of coping, which will probably affect conditions or something. That's not incredibly important right now

The relevant insight really is: the hack is about putting aside your own loss while you deal with something more important. Everyone cops, but sometimes not well.

Voting day!

Voting day!

I been wanting to live this year non-ironically. To embrace my enjoyment of ideas, people, and projects. To be honest about that. To stand up to bullying, and be pretty upfront about it. To act genuinely.

This has, from time to time, caused problems.

Today, it was hard. Virginia is an open primary state, so I could vote for whomever I want.

I have minimal concern over which of my political party* wins the nomination. But, there is a member of the opposite party who, if secured the nomination, would pretty much ensure my side won.

There is, I have no incentive to vote for a member of my party. I have little concern over which of them wins. But, the other side? I could cast a vote for that asshole and watch as the party erupts in flame. And giggle with schadenfreude, knowing that I did my part.

But, I did not. Instead, I figured out which of my candidates I preferred and voted, instead of hate voting. Because to do otherwise would be cynical.

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. It is odd, knowing that I acted contrary to my long-term interests to maintain this almost Aristotelian ideal of genuineness.

*Note: Stated without regard for political party, because that's not what this is about. I'm happy to have that conversation if my political views aren't obvious.
