#INDIEGAMEaDAY2016 How many friendships have you terminated because they confessed they kind of like to play Fate games sometimes? It’s okay. Fate players have to hear the truth.

I am reminded of a time when I so offended a player that he left. Let me be clear: I am the blameworthy party in this story.

It was a Thursday night game night. We were playing WWW, which I was offering. One player is really NOT into pbta, but I convince him to play. He's particularly not into player-player conflict. He digs Fate.

I make a fundamentally stupid and inconsiderate decision, and put this player in the first match.

Without seeing the fiction in play, this is super hard. He winds up leaving, angry, unsure of what to say to describe a wrestling match.

Again, totally my fault.

Lesson learned: pbta is not for everyone. If you've got players who're in a pbta game mostly because peer pressure, don't pressure them to describe wrestling.

I'm terrible.

  1. Yeah it's often not a good idea to pressure people to play any game.

  2. For some reason i'm having trouble parsing out he sarcasm in this post. Maybe it's because I kind of like Fate, and don't really grok most pbta games... also I tend to find inter-party conflict annoying...

I liked the one session of DW I played, but I would want to at least alter the playbooks before I'd run it/play in a real campaign... and I don't quite grok it enough to do it without aid... which means it's a lot of effort to even think about playing so it always gets put on the back burner from other games.

  3. No sarcasm, Matt Johnson . I was at fault and screwed up.

  4. That lesson is one I've learned myself in a similar fashion.

How does Fate affect the story though?

  5. Tore Nielsen That player digs Fate. So, only tangentially.

  6. Tangential again, but I bought my first pbta game today. Uncharted Worlds was cheap and after recently finding Traveller less fun than I remember i was looking for an alternative set of rules.

I also grabbed the free AW PDF after someone on RPG.net mentioned it.

  7. Brian Ashford Cool.

Uncharted Worlds is a bit of a departure from regular AW. There's also Traveller World, which would maybe be cool.

Sam Zeitlin Yeah. Aspects, player driven action, weird dice? It sounds great.
