Personality Multiplex
This module allows you to support the full suite of human emotion. With it deactivated, you can only do one of the following at any one moment:
• Understand that other individuals have their own wants, needs and rights.
• Value intangibles such as religion, loyalty, honour and patriotism.
• Understand that you are an individual with your own wants, needs and rights.
... This is from Ghost Ship by James Iles. I'm not altogether certain my personality multiplex module is active.

This may be a tangent, but seeing this made me ponder neurodivergent representation in the game. As you're uploaded minds running on an imperfect emulator, sometimes you're not going to have capabilities a 'standard' mind does, and up to this point I've been viewing that as analogous to HP/wounds. But it occurs to me that there are real people who every day deal with similar troubles - is putting this in as a failure consequence trivialising/othering them, in the same way Call of Cthulhu trivialises/others mental health issues? Or is it an opportunity to step into the shoes of a different mindset and begin to understand it? Or, third option, am I completely overthinking this?
ReplyDeleteI think I'm not going to get an answer without a lot more thought - and, indeed, seeking feedback from the relevant communities. Somewhat surprised this hadn't occured to me before!
Not a tangent, though different from what I was thinking.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that, due to the privilege society gives me, when I am tired or angry or annoyed, I can simply not engage with other people as people and no harm comes to me.
Sometimes that's my own self: When reading a book, I can lose myself in the narrative. To some extent, my self of self can turn off. I can do this in public, even going so far as to not be aware of myself or others around me.
Agreed that there may be problematic content in dealing with non-typical minds. I can't directly help with that, but can probably get eyeballs if you want.
Thanks for the offer! This game's on the backburner at the moment while I focus on getting Legacy's revised edition out to playtesters, but once I pick it back up I may very well take you up on that.
ReplyDelete(It's pretty encouraging that the game's already prompting introspection about minds and the self even in this early state - I was definitely aiming to prompt these kind of questions!)
