Tell me some good things, minor or major, that you've done lately.
Here are some examples of what I've done today:
-- On public transit, unobtrusively stood between a white guy having a very bad day and a WoC. I figure violence is less likely to happen if it has to go through me, and then nobody has the worst day of their life. Granted, if violence does happen to me then I'll fall down with catastrophic injuries. Or worse, lose my cool and meet violence with violence.
-- Called my house rep about a klansman being nominated for Lynch's job. This is the third time in as many days, and sure I know the House doesn't have much of a say in appointments. They've got more than I do. And its easy, and they didn't know yet!

Yeah, called my House Rep and they're scrambling to formulate a response to Sessions. Also, learning Spanish because it's available in a freakin' app so I ran out of excuses.
ReplyDeletePretty sure we have the same house rep, Tony Lower-Basch !
ReplyDeleteI don't really know how to talk on the phone to them. They are always "how can i help you?", and I'm like "gah we cannot have a klansmen take lynch's seat omg he cannot be confirmed please"
Basically, I devolve into near incoherence on the phone. I should work on that.
Like Jeff Sessions, as Attourney General? I'd call my Representative, only...He's one of 'em...
ReplyDeleteRaymond McVay Then its even more important that you call them! If a few republican house reps / senators are against this, that counts for a lot more than my super liberal house rep!
ReplyDeleteWilliam Nichols True enough.
ReplyDeleteMostly just advising Sweetie on the search for a beneficial-to-humanity job, which is more enabling than direct action, but I've been flat so I'll take it. And helping him do some emotional labor wrap-up from the campaign work.
ReplyDeleteOh, and phoning the House Oversight Committee every few hours, even though I'm a bit phone-phobic: https://plus.google.com/u/0/110156156060677413721/posts/Qqu9R6qr3Hd (haven't gotten through yet.)
ReplyDeleteThis is very small, but feasible while sick: When I find hate speech-rich profiles online - like the people spamming the National Archives about how the U.S. Civil War was a Zionist conspiracy (!?!) - I've been reporting them for profile deletion.
ReplyDeleteMy swiping finger? This machine may not kill fascists, but it's hopefully getting hatemongers kicked out of the online agora.
Also, setting up humble recurring donations to good organizations. So I'm still sending the SPLC my coffee money next year, even if I can't sustain this outrage. (Though if half these appointments and plans go through...)
That said, I want to listen here for suggestions. I've been unsure how valuable a use of my limited sick girl energy it is to call my hyper liberal representatives who are already telling me they're on it.
Monica Fulvio Yeah, I'm lucky in my representatives too. Sweetie has added "work for the state of California in trying to keep CA a good place" to his job search list, at my suggestion. (Seriously, "good places to work to do good" is a target rich environment; it's just about convincing someone who can also give us health insurance and enough to cover room & board, so we can pay attention to that and not to bare survival.) Sick girl fistbumps.
ReplyDeleteI made three kinds of homemade cranberry sauce and canned it. I'm trying to find joy in everyday things, because life needs more joy.
ReplyDeleteJule Ann Wakeman Hooray for homemade canning! That's not easy. We've made the occasional freezer jam, which is straightforward but precise. Actually canning? Daaaaamn.
ReplyDeleteI like to buy a few extra bags of fresh cranberries in this season and then freeze them. When berry season rolls around I make cranberry sauce with half strawberries or blackberries or blueberries. The super gelling pectin power of the cranberries means it sets up fuss free and with little cooking, so the berry flavors are very fresh tasting, and I like the tartness with the berries. Freeze whatever you can't get through in a few weeks.
