Hive mind -- How do I find the amount of pavement in a city?

I didn't see it on wiki, nor on city-data. Any suggestions?

  1. I can't imagine you'll find anything other than very rough estimates. It's just not something anyone particularly cares about. It's the bit inbetween all the things that everyone does care about.

  2. Out of curiosity, are you trying to find surface area, volume, or mass?

  3. Michael Moceri Surface area.

Brian Ashford I've found a little bit of info, basically suggesting towns in the American West are ~60%+ roads, towns in the East Coast are ~40%, and old European cities are ~25%.

  5. Jason Morningstar That's starting a nice long googlewalk. Maybe it'll get what I want.

  6. If you can find miles of roads as a fun fact and average number of lanes per road, that should do the trick

  7. Todd Sprang Nah, what I want is to compare city to city, so area on earth isn't gonna get me there.
