Need an RPG we can play while filled with existential dread.

Need an RPG we can play while filled with existential dread.

Nromally, this time slot is filled with either Moonicurn versus Space Wyrm or The Watch. Both of which are off the table right now, for being too on the nose.

Alternative suggestions?

  1. Sorry, Isaac Kuo . Not a game that fills me with dread, but a game that can be played while needing escapism from my current sense of dread. That make sense?

  2. I'm currently reading the Warren. Seems like a lot to dread in there. There's also still life, that can do well for the existential.

  3. Star Wars with emphasis on the poorly thought out heroics should see you through. FFGs games are great if you have them, if not Over The Edge or Uncharted Worlds or whatever else would work fine.

  4. I don't know what kind of RPGs you're into but just wrapped up two sessions of Quinn Murphy's Five Fires and it is great. Everyone has an art which corresponds to the five fires in hip-hop. You make your crew and your neighbourhood together to make a city. Each person has small and big problems they work on and in turn effect change in the community. The mini games for each fire are amazing for creativity and work really well to help you explain your intentions with your art vs how it's perceived and how it's consumed. I really can't recommend it enough, I think it's free, or is on his Patreon. Highly recommend it!

  5. Fraser Simons That ... a crew and a neighborhood and problems to solve? And they change the community around them?

    I've found it, and am going to read it. Whether or not it gets played, I don't know. But this is right up my alley.

  6. William Nichols It is really great. Each 6 sessions is an "era" and at the end of which you use resources you've accrued to impact your community. It was really satisfying to play and the creation of your city and neighborhoods is really cool. Your art can be iconic or iconoclastic depending on the other people at the table's viewpoint on your own art and vice versa, you can be an MC, a DJ, a Graffiti Artist, or a B-Boy/Girl.

    I got really into my character and I think if you played week to week you could prepare actual images of other art you'd like to use as your own at the table, in order to try to convey what you mean. We used phrases because we played online and it worked great, but I could see people being so into their art and character they'd prepare each week ahead of time to do specific story arcs for themselves. Which is what I did in two sessions, worked well.

  7. I think we're goinna do City of Mist tonight.

    Its pbta, so easy for us. Its new to us, so we'll have to concentrate. Its supers, so potentially good escapism.

    But, do keep up the suggestions! I'm enjoying looking up new games!

  8. Play something heroic and larger than life. Reach deep into the unconscious and bring out the biggest, most heartening archetypes, the anima, the hero with a thousand faces. Play Star Wars as a Jedi. Play a fantasy game and be a paladin, a white-robed wizard, a jolly thief with a heart of gold. Play a four-color superhero without a shade of grit or irony. Remind yourself that there's good in the world.

    Or go the opposite route. Stride the jeweled thrones of imaginary universes and be the grim but honorable assassin, the conqueror of worlds, the bookish academician flirting with sorcery and of madness to stave off the inevitable end. Confront the dark things you trawl from the psyche, or get into the mind of a bad guy and recognize the all too human impulses that drive them.

    But above all, play. :)

    A fine slate. Anywho, I've been meaning to do The Five Fires for forever, and City of Mist is just so, so pretty. We're spoiled for choices, here!

  10. Feng Shui. The first one. Tons of silly shenanigans to be had. Based around Asian action movie tropes if I remember correctly, like the kung fu master and the rogue cop and the talking animal.

  11. We played Ciy of Mist last night. Delightful!

    Loads of laughs were had all around the table, and for a few minutes everything was fine. The Dread was pushed back.

    Its pbta with a bit of fate. With conditions instead of a harm track, but they work pretty similarly. XP is through applying weakness tags.

    The whole "the city is filled with mist" really helped with the escapism. We were in The City, and everything else was Out Of Town. That was great!
