I'm not sure about this, for a bunch of cascading reasons.

Because this crazy year isn't over yet, motherfucking Jill Stein is calling for a recount in three questionable state election results. But since candidates need to pay for the recounts they petition, she's fundraising to make it happen. She's been raising $3000 a minute so far. She needs to get to $2.5million by Friday. She has a chance. You can help.
RESHARE THIS LIKE CRAZY.

Such as? Curious.
ReplyDeleteDitto
ReplyDeleteThis will be abbreviated because mobile.
ReplyDeleteFor one, I don't trust Stein. Meaning I think this may just be a trick.
Two, Clinton has conceded so we're done.
Three, to overturn at this point would be unprecedented.
Four, Nate silver suggests the days aren't nearly as weird as others suggest, and are explainable by demographics.
That's the start. I'm all for hail Mary passes that may save the world from darkness and climate change and actual Nazis, but so long as we have a necromancer government, I'm not sure we're going to get it.
Ah, so no objection to the idea politically?
ReplyDeleteI'm never against counting votes.
ReplyDeleteI've said before that I'm morbidly curious about this. If you are down to one hit point and fading fast at the feet of the owlbear, when suddenly:
ReplyDeletea squirrel monkey armed with a picnic knife appears!
.... what can you say but "OK, little dude, if you think you can help..."
William Nichols I totally hear you.
ReplyDelete1. I don't trust Stein either, but if they take the money and run, they are killing the Green party basically forever. As much as I think she's a nitwit in other areas, I don't think she'd do that to her party.
2. Clinton's concession is a formality that means, legally and politically, nothing. The actual presidential election happens on December 19th. Lots of things can still happen, even if they're longshots.
3. Overturning at this point would be unprecedented. So is the presidential election being hacked, which is a distinct possibility. Personally I do not care one whit about precedent if it makes it easier for the election to be stolen. I want to know who won. If we can actually catch hackers (unlikely), I want them caught. And if we detect an actual hack, I want serious electoral reform so it never happens again.
4. I'm not really inclined to pay much attention to Nate Silver these days. He was ludicrously right about one presidential election once. He's been very very wrong many times over.
I don't want predictions, second-hand analyses, or precedent. I want a god damn election.
I'm for a careful count primarily because I think it will demonstrate that the system was secure and accurate. It's hard to imagine having too much reassurance on that point.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's a Stein trick, because the exchange makes so much clear sense. Stein (and by extension her party) gets to do something that appeals to a broad liberal base, but which the DNC is in a terrible position to do themselves. That's a rare opportunity in politics, it makes sense for her to jump on it. She's leveraging third party status to her advantage. Good on her.
I notice the goal is now 7 million...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I gather the goal they put for "we need this boy Friday to make this happen" was what they needed for Wisconsin's Friday filing deadline. Not the clearest way to describe it.
ReplyDeleteApparently Soros maybe put in five million, though that's way above the individual threshhold limit.
ReplyDeleteIf so, it is a positive sign, as it means there are adults running the thing.
William Nichols I'd be highly skeptical without some verification. That sounds a lot like alt-Reich propaganda.
ReplyDeleteBut the Clinton team has also signed on, and all Stein does is get the ball rolling, after that it's state election boards, anyway. There are adults involved. ;)
Huh, maybe! I thought it was a good thing.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Nichols That's the rather disturbing thing about this recent divergence in "news:" that the same message is taken so differently by different audiences. Lies and half-truths intended to sow division. Gotta be careful.

ReplyDeleteI welcome criticism. And I am fully aware it's not an easy task, but we're talking about the future of the world. Consider that.
