There's a couple different dimensions I judge jobs I could take on:
1. Pay, obviously
2. How the job feels - this is everything from commute to coworkers. All those subjective feelings.
3. effect the job has on the world - largely positive, neutral, or negative.

I've had jobs and positions with a lot of variety on these.

Current job pays a bit less than last job, but (2) and (3) are both so much higher. My highest on (1) had very low (2) and (3). This is the best (2) I've had, and quite possibly the best (3).

[ While ultimately what we're doing is something I'd rather we not have, here in reality it'll save the government a whole lot of money while producing better results. I can get behind that. ]

How do you judge your jobs? How is your job now?

  1. Well, that' s annoying... i replied to this but it didn't take... sigh...

Basically... I'd break 1 and 2 into sub categories , like breaking pay out into the money + health care + retirement + other compensation stuff. But basically 1 and 2 encompass what I look for at jobs. 3 only enters my mental calculus as a "I probably wouldn't work for literal jack booted thugs even if 1 and 2 were really good".

My job right now is a mixed bag.
    1. I am paid less than what my general years of experience would indicate, but I do get pretty good health care and retirement benefit packages. As well as a good amount of time off, when I can use it... well, good for the US.
    2. I hate my immediate supervisor as a supervisor. I hate the upper management structure of the office. I like my immediate team mates. My user base is generally fine. My commute is okay. Them implementing flexible start times has been a good thing for me. The over all mood of the office is soul crushing.
    3. This is probably net positive honestly, though I never really think about it. I do IT work for the grant processing office in my university. So i tangentially support all of the grant and research money coming into the university and that is probably a net benefit to the world.

  2. Does the job require the skills and knowledge I want to employ?
Does the job fit the geographical factors I want? (Close to family, transit, how populated an area, etc)
Does the job let me work with the kind of people I want to?
Does it give me the amount of responsibility I want (and corresponding pay)?
Does it have the right work conditions? (Lets me get up and walk around, clear expectations, etc)
Does it fit with my values, and let me leave the mark on the world I want to?
