When you come back from the dungeon, where are you and what's cool about this story?
Well, I figure there are a few locations:
-- The Inn / Bar, where it's one silver for food, lodging, and entertainment. Or, you can buy individual items for coppers.
The Inn is run by two people, who are related to the characters. There's a bartender and a cook. The bartender is the fighter's best friend, and the wizard's brother. The Cleric's mother is the cook, who is also the thief's lover.
-- The Keep, where it's a copper for food, lodging, and entertainment. But, if you stay here you are expected to be accessible for defense.
I think I'll setup the Keep so that it is the Fighter's favorite place to crash, where the Thief is running a con. It's where the cleric's lover is enlisted, and the Wizard's father is an officer.
-- The Archmage's Manor, where it's a gold for food, lodging, and entertainment. Or, you can buy indivicual items for silver.
I'll set this up so it is where the Fighter's cousin works in service, and the cleric's lover works here. The thief avoids the place, and it is run by the Wizard's master.
-- The Temple, most related to the cleric.
-- The Market, which sells almost anything and is most related to the Thief.
Basically, this. Everybody is related, and you've just brought in some ridiculous wealth.

How big is this town? So what proportion of the folk their age are now off adventuring rather than whatever they should be doing to ensure the perpetuation of the town?
ReplyDeleteOther locations:
ReplyDeleteThe farms just outside of town and where everyone is expected to lend a hand at harvest time.
The quay where the fishermen and the trading barges pull in. A good place to meet people and there is a more rowdy bar down here. Probably the Bard's favourite place.
The Old Wood is a bit of a walk out of town but everyone knows it well and it's good for herbs, foraged food and some taping and hunting. Druids and Rangers probably spend more time here than in town.
The witch's hut. Actually more of a combined school and hospital.
The bath house. One thing adventures really need after getting out of the dungeon is to get clean.
Optional: The house of monetised companionship.
I assume that when you are actually running this the players will get to choose their connections to the establishments? Or at least randomise them?
ReplyDeleteYou have a [sibling/parent/cousin/aunt or uncle/friend/nemesis]
Who [works at/owns/wants to stop working at/hates]
The [Inn/Smithy/Stables/farm/other farm/pig farm/dock]
William Nichols Do you know the OSR game Beyond the Wall. Players generate their character's with playbooks full of random event tables. These events are things which shaped the character you play and they give you skills, stat boosts and friendships. They also flesh out the town you will be based in. It's very cool and something like that could work for you here
ReplyDeletePatty Kirsch I think t's like rumspringa. A brief period in which you are expected to try to make your fortune. Failing most of the time, some stay at it, and some just get rich.
ReplyDeleteOh, and some die, of course.
So does that mean there are rival parties from this same town?
ReplyDeleteX always overcharges you because you dumped their kid.
I'm kind of orthogonal to what you're looking for, aren't I?
ReplyDeleteThough now my question is.... why are they all staying at the inn rather than with their various parents....
Patty Kirsch I really like the idea, actually.
ReplyDeleteSo, honest: I was wondering where you can stay for cheap. And, clearly, it's at your mothers house, but who'd want to go stay there?
