A novel I have been enjoying immensely: Thessaly.

A novel I have been enjoying immensely: Thessaly.

Basic conceit: The goddess Athena grants the prayers of 300 scholars throughout history, bringing them together to form Plato's Republic. She brings them some advanced technology (robots), and puts them in the shadow of a volcano it is known will soon explode, wiping out anything they try.

First step: They buy 10,000 ten year old slaves throughout history, raising them in the ways of The Republic while deciding you need to be fifty to read The Republic.

Predictably, things go wrong. Especially with the festival of Hera, the kidnapping of Socrates, and that the God Apollo chose to incarnate as one of the ten year olds. He wanted to learn about being mortal.
