Most of these were "shotgun" through LinkedIn's "quick apply" and various other things like that.
Maybe one was on Craigslist. It was highly targeted, and used a new cover letter. At this point, I'd had zero responses.
I've had three or four phone interviews this week, including the one through craigslist. I'm expecting a few more to come in. These have been weird; a lot with recruiting companies, and we've discussed rates. When I have said things like "You guys, a hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money and really I don't need that much", they have said things like "You should be paid more like 120. We can get that for you. Don't lowball yourself."
This is Not Normal for me. Normally, my application # / week is much lower, because in the past Quick Apply or whatever didn't exist. I'm not sure about the rate, since I can't easily compare the Quick Apply to anything in the past. Craigslist has had a 100% success rate, but that's with n = 1 so it doesn't count.
I think this is what a 2% unemployment rate looks like, and the privilege of a master's degree with ten years experience and "lead" in my current title.
Tony Lower-Basch is this where you tell me that a certified scrum master with a masters degree and 10 years experience can have a salary that starts with a 2?
The folks leaving my employer who post salaries are usually in the 150 range, that's mostly for dev work, but with less experience. That's also only the ones who post and are complaining about pay...
If the recruiters are saying that it means either they take a cut of your salary, or you are asking so little they think you will trash talk them when you learn what your peers make.
There is a difference between living with discomfort with how much society pays for your skills, and living with discomfort with what you do for a living.
I'd be interested.
ReplyDeleteLikewise.
ReplyDeleteprobably?

ReplyDeleteLast week, I applied for over 80 jobs.

There was at least one response I didn't know about. I've had at least 4 -- 4 out of 80 ain't great, but it is kind of ok.
ReplyDeleteYou and me should get dinner some time and talk numbers about what the market pays for various specializations.
ReplyDeleteA surprising number of these are subcontractors trying to get folks for positions within the fed or other large scale local employer.

ReplyDeleteI think salaries that start with a 2 bother me.

ReplyDeleteThese numbers bother me. For a bunch of reasons.
ReplyDeleteUpdate: I have a couple more lined up. Wtf.
ReplyDeleteI've started a spreadsheet

ReplyDeleteI feel like what I do is easy, and that there hard parts are ones I can't do anyhow.
ReplyDeleteThat's not imposter syndrome! Look at nerdly: I did the easy part and other people did the hard parts.
ReplyDeleteMy take on this is take what they'll give you, and if it makes you feel guilty, donate more.
ReplyDelete^^^this
ReplyDeleteI just halted a phone screen as the job - using big Data to get Republicans elected - wasnt with it.
ReplyDeleteEven if I gave away fifty percent and actively did a bag job, it'd still be bad.

ReplyDeleteA rejection came in just as did a request for a phone screen.
ReplyDeleteGosh. Hopefully one of these'll turn into a thing.
