Novel: Full Share

Novel: Full Share
Author: Nathan Lowell
Rating: 5 out of 5

Something weird happened towards the end of this book. Maybe something got in my eye -- some grit?

Our protagonist proves himself once again and continues moving up the ranks.

These first three form a natural trilogy. It'll be a few days until I have the fourth.

And time I read one of these, I get new ideas for my pirate game, too!

  1. That's the book that has made me cry the most in this series though not the only one that made me cry.

  2. Agreed, Josh Mannon !

    -- spoilers ---

Going from sex with strangers to sex with a girl he loves was a good switch, and I'm glad we saw both. I choked up basically everytime Lois bought him something new. And for sure when the Captain is all "ten recommendations". And, when we found out the girls are going to the academy, too. I was a complete wreck at the end.

Also, living room space ships. Sofas on the bridge somehow got me.

I like these books. I ordered the next three. I'm spending actual money on them, as they aren't at the library.

  3. Also, Josh Mannon : You suggested yesterday any ship rated for weeks or months need a chief petty officer in charge of enviromental, i think is what you said. In the language of the books, is that a full share slot?

  4. I spent years begging him to give me ways to pay for these books. I must have listened to each one at least ten times. I promise you they do not become less poignant as time wears on. I, in fact, found myself realizing things he'd planted earlier that I'd missed that make these final chapters that much more impressive.

  5. He does the Dickens thing with characters which is something I personally enjoy while understanding that it isn't for everyone. Be prepared for shocks and tears later in the series too. I still haven't listened to the final book as I'm waiting on the Audiobook though I own the PDF.

  6. I would say it is either a full or double share slot depending on the size of the crew and the existence or not of an officer over engineering specifically. Full share if there is an engineering officer and double share if there is not.

  7. Hmm.

To loop this back to the RPG, as this is totally a media-inspired RPG ...

(this game sounds more complicated than it plays).

I've got playbooks set up as dualities -- you get one, but not the other. I've had Mechanic / Surgeon. That is, if you've got a surgeon, you don't have a decent mechanic and need to rely on the crew for anything fancy. The position you're talking about is either the mechanic, or an NPC.

I've also got shipboard systems, four of which are related to these two: foodstuffs, medical, repair, and sailors. As is, those first three are all supplies.

I can probably make more of a focus on enviromental by changing a few lines in the supplies. Maybe making it less about supplies and more about having ship's systems that keep you all alive for a fortnight.

Maybe make one of those lines about how long the ship is rated. So, +0 is days, +1 is weeks, +2 is months, etc.

Its a thing to think about.

In this ship, by the by, I've got 18 crew. Only 6 of those are sailors, who keep the ship alive. The rest are boarders, traders, and seers. With just six, one is probably dedicated to enviromental.

  8. The next set of books focus on tighter crews and should help you immensely. Fair warning, the next book is really hard to dig through because of the emotional content and triggers. Prepare yourself.

  9. Thanks for the heads up!

The tighter crew will be helpful. The 40+ of the Lois meant not everyone had a face. With a smaller crew, it'll be easier to make everyone human.
