Things I brought to Dreamation that were super useful and non-obvious:
1. Bag of apples
2. Box of food bars
3. OTC drugs for a variety of minor maladies.
What i wish I'd had:
A. Easier access to coffee.
I never learned how to use the room's coffee machine, because it was easy enough to get downstairs. Fine.
The last day, there were a few things I needed to see to before breakfast, which we had at the buffet. They bring coffee out slowly.
While waiting, my need for coffee was such that I said "I have no more fucks left to give" when confronting something minorly annoying.
Which, come to think of it, spawned a really good conversation on "fucks" versus "spoons". I'm attempting to use "fucks" when I absolutely could do something, but it is obnoxious and I don't want to.
For example:
"I have no more fucks left to give!" -- said when I choose not to engage with a topic because it won't be productive, and will siphon off energy that I want to hoard.
"I don't have the spoons for that." -- used when I cannot bring myself to do a thing, whether due to pain or energy or cognitive limitations or other things.
When I got my coffee, there was an instant change in my perception of the world, as well as my demeanor. It was, as someone else put it, a "fuck multiplier". But, certainly not a spoon multiplier.

So: bring fruit, meal bars, meds, and coffee.
ReplyDeleteThe fucks versus spoons is great! I think I've been similarly using it, without really realizing it until you spelled it out here.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you may want to take a closer look at that caffeine addiction. <3
I cannot recommend enough taking airborne or other vitamins at a con. Not only are you exposed to more germs than normal, but the lack of sleep seriously depletes your immune system. Even ignoring how much it helps prevent con crud, the vitamins very tangibly make you feel better after a short night.
ReplyDeleteJay Treat I may add alcohol wipes, or something. Quick, easy to use and give away, and the smell dissipates quickly.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't sound too far off from what I bring. But instead of bringing fruit I bring fiber (lord I am old) and I buy fruit each day.
ReplyDeleteMy shoulder thanks you again for sharing your stash! I'm not sure how to fix coffee, but a fast way to get hot water would have solved my tea issue. There's probably a non-compete with the Starbucks. :/
ReplyDelete...that is a seriously good point about fucks v. spoons
ReplyDelete(fuck multiplier hurr hurr)
(goddammit I am so tired)
Another Con staple for me is Bread, Peanut Butter and Jelly or Honey, and ziplock bags. Wake up in the morning, make a couple of PBJs and toss 'em in your backpack and you can easily save $10 or more you would otherwise want to spend on expensive con food!
ReplyDeleteI loath peanut butter, Yanni Cooper . But, legit, that's why I had the meal bars from TJs. A similar solution!
ReplyDeleteAs a vegetarian I don't know which meats will stay tasty but some sliced deli meat of a less perishable kind + sliced cheese could also easily work for some quickie takealong conwiches.
ReplyDeleteOh, also! A watch, and a battery pack for my phone. Also super useful.
ReplyDelete'Yanni Cooper I am, also, basically vegetarian. That coupled with my loathing of peanut butter makes the meal bars work good for me.
