A thing I did not like: After the credits, in blank panther.

I avoid MCU movies, for a lot of reasons, Let's bracket that for later.
Halfway through the credits, when we see Black Panther at the UN? Pretty cool. I figure that's the end.
We wait until the end. We see some white guy at Wakanda, and his name is Bucky so I know he's with the MCU because I'm a nerd.
We leave the theatre talking about Cap and Iron Man and Hulk and Dr. Strange and other MCU white characters. I pauses in conversation, and reoriented it to the characters in Black Panter.
So gosh, that ending really messed with us. Did not like.

Didn't really bother me. I squeed for a moment because Bucky woke up, said "There's the other white boy that Suri got to fix," and then proceeded to talk to my friends about how awesome the movie was and how I was already wanting to go see it again. (shrug)

ReplyDeleteIt took me a minute to figure out who it was, then another as to why I should care, then decided I didn't. I have trouble tracking the Bucky plot. It turns to peanuts adult speak in my head.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I kinda think you framing Black Panther as not an MCU movie is a little problematic. It IS an MCU movie, and people setting it outside of that canon lessens the achievement.
ReplyDeleteBlink. Misha, hear you.
ReplyDeleteI say this as a Triumph: Black Panter is superior to every dang ole MCU movie I've ever seen (possible exception: original Iron Man), and belongs with them about as much as Citizen Kane belongs with Pulp Fiction.
My group didn't have that issue, and also thoroughly enjoyed the teaser, but they are pretty heavily MCU/comic nerds. We transitioned into some of the larger MCU stuff along the way, but the initial stuff was all Black Panther.
ReplyDeleteHmm. I was going to summarize the Bucky subplot and then realized that might be kinda man-splainy and unwanted... so instead I'm gonna offer that if you are interested in a bare bones summary let me know.
I think it's intended to be symmetry with the ending of Civil War, where the last credit scene is the triumphant reveal that Bucky's being kept safe in Wakanda.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see Civil War so I was a little mystified, but then guessed it was probably Bucky. If anyone can fix him, Shuri can!
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed the Bucky sighting for about 10 seconds and then got back to the important business of screaming about Black Panther. :)
