Wanted: a mwans of playing video games such that:
-- Games can be played by two people in the same place
-- Games have simple controls, like Tetris or the original Doom
-- Games more as social activity than as soul burning need
-- Preferably, at least one building game like SimCity. But not that, we've played it.

Isn't that what consoles excel at?
ReplyDeleteMaybe! I don't know anything about them. We spetn like an hour in a best buy today, which was kinda fun. The Nintendo Switch looks fun, and substantially prettier than gaming laptops.
ReplyDeleteThe switch is an interesting choice. Ultimately it will depend on which games you want to play. We have an Xbox one and have had a PlayStation 3 in the past.
ReplyDeleteThe few times I've played XBox or PS, they have seemed pretty fiddly. I remember being frustated with Fallout 3 having too many controls, for ex.
ReplyDeleteAs long as you are happy with only buying two or three games a year, get a Switch.
ReplyDeletePS4/Xbone are just as fiddly as they have always been and they have very few opportunities for social gaming as they assume multiplayer games will be online.
Yeah, that assumption of "multi-player = online" that has aggravated me. The Switch seems to be pushing its developers to consider in-person multiplayer as a primary use case.
ReplyDeleteThe fiddliness of consoles has kept me away from them. The expense , size, and fuglness of gaming laptops keeps me away from them.
ReplyDeleteThe Switch seems like it may be the right ground. Played a demo of Zelda, and I hope that is as complicated as it gets. That had a level or two more complication than I really want, but I get it for a game like Zelda.
I've played a lot of Mario Kart with my son on his Switch. It is less fiddly than Zelda.
ReplyDeleteLovers in a dangerous spacetime might be a good fit
ReplyDeleteWhat's that, Yanni Cooper?
ReplyDeleteon first reading I wasn't sure what mwans meant and assumed you were looking for games rather than consoles... That said LIADS is a local co-op shooter (it's multiplatform too) so whatever you end up deciding to get, it might be a game worth looking at. loversinadangerousspacetime.com - Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime: 1- to 4-Player Co-op Space Shooter
ReplyDeleteIf you have a decent PC, you might consider getting a steam link and some controllers as there are quite a few good multiplayer co-op games on PC/steam ... and the link+controllers will be considerably cheaper than an actual console ...
Yanni Cooper I'd have to buy a computer. Upon reflection, it's a non-starter.
ReplyDeleteHmm... /if/ you can find one, the SNES Classic might be worth investigating... assuming 2 player is sufficient
ReplyDeleteA SNES classic is a good shout if 16-bit retro isn't a problem. I would love one myself, but they are hard to find. There are a bunch of similar devices which can be hacked in various ways to run old ROMs. With a bit of work you can have a very fun little device with hundreds of retro games to play.
ReplyDelete(If "fiddly to set up" is as much of a problem as "fiddly to play" though, stick with the official Nintendo products.)
SNES Classic or Switch it is!
ReplyDeleteThey appear to be $300 on Amazon, a seriously jacked up price as Nintendo's actual price is lower than the market demands. Huh.
It's a bad time of year to be buying Nintendo hardware. I guess if you are lucky you might grab something in the sales?
ReplyDeleteWilliam Nichols lovers in a dangerous spacetime was recently ported to the switch.
ReplyDeleteWill you show it to me next time we are in okc, Karen Steele?
ReplyDeleteThe switch gets my vote! You should come over and try out ours!
ReplyDeleteThere more and more great indie games coming out for the Switch; I did not know about liads
