Pro tip: a spoonful of sugar can instantly stop hiccups. Depending on the type of hiccup.
Hold it in your mouth. The sugar makes the misfiring saliva glands restart, and one type of hiccup starts with saliva glands messing up.
Weird. Also, gross. Also, effective.

I've also had success with drinking water upside down.
ReplyDeleteSo what you're telling me is that a spoonful of sugar makes the hiccuping go down in the most delightful way?
ReplyDeleteYeah, Andy Hauge. Almost like the stories from midwives and nannies were real, and displaced when doctors decided to take over deliverying and childcare.
ReplyDeleteRalph Mazza I've never been able to make that work.
ReplyDeleteI always adored this method. However, fair warning from my idiomatic experience... if you are a person prone to hiccups when you have a sleep deficit, and you cure them (temporarily) with sugar, that sugar may (depending on your metabolism) also suppress the chemical reactions that would let you get to sleep.
ReplyDeleteGreat way to get lots of work done, and then collapse, after ten or so repetitions at one hour intervals.
