It says something delightful that the Doctor Who stuff I've seen the last day or so is either:
a) Entirely Positive.
b) Making fun of men who are pissed about a woman being The Doctor.
Circle Curation FTW. I've seen absolutely nothing where someone is actually pissed about it.

Yes! I'm in the same boat. Oh, except I did see some irate comments on the CBC's Facebook page, but there's nothing I can do about that.
ReplyDeleteThey were actually kind of funny: the first was the classic "I have been a fan for decades and I just threw over $1000 worth of collectibles in the garbage!" Liar.
The second was "I don't mind a woman Doctor, but I hope they don't use this is a jumping-off point to make the show all about social justice and political correctness." Like... have you even watched Doctor Who any time since the revival? The Doctor's first on-screen kiss is with a pansexual man.
... you could avoid facebook. :-)
ReplyDelete"political correctness". Dang. That's still a dumb word.
I could, except that my gaming group and my non-games social group use Facebook as a primary organizing tool, so I would be entirely lost.
ReplyDeleteIt's also, bizarrely, the most-reliable way to get a hold of my mother (short of calling, which I can't do if I'm at work).
My boys are so thrilled. My teenage Whovian, particularly, fist-pumped and shouted "Finally!"
ReplyDelete"Avoid Facebook"
ReplyDeleteAnd also any comment section, anywhere, ever.... but what's the fun of that?
While generally pro-Dr Who's existence I do not really watch the show and I don't know who the actress is, but I do not object to the new Dr. being an actress. So my opinion on this is positive, but not terribly strong.
Excepting the people who are saying "Nurse Who". They can fuck right off. Fuck your gender stereotypes. That I have a strong opinion on.
Who subreddit had a lot from what I heard.
ReplyDelete.. yep, sounds like I am continuing to ignore the pain buttons. It's pretty straightforward, guys.
ReplyDeleteDoes my mom wish I was on fb? Sure. Does she figure out other ways to reach me? Of course.
Do many of my friends do social engagements through fb? Sure. Do I see them anyway? You betcha.
Your curation may not be filtering out all that much, it turns out.
ReplyDeleteradiotimes.com - Overwhelming majority of Doctor Who fans are looking forward to first female Doctor, says poll
I've seen some comments of the soft-misogynistic "I hope they don't make it all about the Doctor being female," and I'm torn how to respond. On the one hand... they clearly weren't worried about (for instance) Capaldi making it all-Scottish.
ReplyDeleteBut on the other hand... I'll admit there's a female-specific scene I'd love to see. I'd love to see some male-dominated invading species somehow in an alliance with the Cybermen (Daleks would touch my heart even more, but Daleks do not ally), and the joint force wiping out everything in its path, right up to the scene where the Doctor shows up.
And the burly testosterone aliens scoff... but the Cybermen all back up and start eyeing the exits.
"What's wrong with you? It's one paltry female!"
"Gender. Is. Irrelevant! She is. The Doctor! We must. Retreat!"
