I've got a weekend alone.
I plan to read a novel by an author whose politics stink; I'll get it from the library.
I'd like to also turn on the TV for quite a bit, and get caught up on genre TV.
So: Tell me of the best science fiction and fantasy shows that are streaming. Access to the standard suite: Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Google, and even HBO.

I enjoyed the new Lost in Space
ReplyDeleteJust any author whose politics stink, or a specific author?
ReplyDeleteOn Netflix, here are tv things I have enjoyed that might be considered fantasy and/or science fiction? I'm not sure what the boundaries are on that. Roughly in order of enjoyment.
* Stranger Things
* Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
* Dramaworld
* iZombie
* Wynona Earp
* Ash vs. Evil Dead
I can't recommend Dramaworld highly enough, it is really a pile of fun, and maybe not something you would think to watch at first glance...
EDIT: the link I had for Dramaworld had spoilers that actually hurt the enjoyment of the series, so I'm taking it out. Just watch the first couple of episodes, each episode is pretty short (20 mins), if that catches your interest watch the rest. There are only 10 total episodes, it barely counts as binging at 20 mins each.
Hans Messersmith a particular author, whose name I do not wish to utter. Suffice it to say, he writes epic fantasy tomes that are ridiculously long and I enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI think you might really enjoy The Orville if you can get through the first episode. It hit's it's stride a few episodes in. I'll second the new Lost in Space; it's good but for reasons very different then The Orville.
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised by how good Legion is.
ReplyDeleteNick Wedig I didn't think of Legion because I bought it on iTunes, but if it is streaming on some service it is well worth it, so good.
ReplyDeleteHans Messersmith I bought the first season through Google Play. So it is available in that way, possibly others.
ReplyDeleteDirk Gently is really fun. I thought Lost in Space was just ok. It might be outside of the genre but the Santa Clarita Diet is delightful (it's a black comedy about suburban life but it does include zombies). I won't talk about stranger things because everyone else does (for good reason).
ReplyDeleteI rather enjoyed Dark Matter (on Netflix). It's not great necessarily, but I thought it was a fun watch. It's 3 seasons, and peaks somewhere in season 2 probably... but the Android character gets better and better through the whole show (IMO).
ReplyDeleteGood shows on Netflix that I don't see nerds online promoting endlessly:
ReplyDeleteGlitch, the Australian show about people who inexplicably come back from the dead and the drama that causes.
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, a better adaptation of the book than I expected.
If you have access to them Legion and The Good Place are two of the best shows to have been on TV in years. I can't really think how to explain either of them without spoiling them...
ReplyDeleteLegion stats off being about someone in an asylum who probably has superpowers. It then gets weird. It is absolutely not about superheroes.
The Good Place starts off as an intelligent sitcom about a little piece of actual heaven. Then it becomes more than that.
Season 1 of the good place was fudging great. I can't wait till season 2 comes to netflix
ReplyDeleteDavid Rothfeder We've already got it in the UK. Do watch it, it's even better than season 1.
ReplyDeleteThat has my so fudging excited I feel like I may sip my pants.
ReplyDeleteDavid Rothfeder Don't lose your shirt man!
ReplyDeleteI just get excited about this carp (sorry Will for getting lost in this, but it is a lot of fun)
ReplyDeleteLegion is on Amazon, and it is so excellent. It explores perception, cognition, addiction, psychic powers, consent, government abuses, human contact through touch and emotion, anxiety and isolation, and, let me tap on the whiteboard here, does so without taking undue cheap shots at mental illness. Easily the best ongoing Marvel series.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen anyone mention the expanse or altered carbon yet, on prime and Netflix, respectively. Also, does handmaid's tale count? Also, Steven universe. Yes, cute and adorable, but emotionally compelling and a has surprisingly deep story line and great soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteEXPANSE
ReplyDeleteKaren knows me the best. This is what I should put on. I know it well enough from the books that I can do other things, and I love it well enough that it'll be heart warminig.
Altered Cabin I will give a pass: I couldn't get through the first ~10 pages of the book.
Handsmaids tale is a possibility, but lead actress is scientologist so badnewsbears.
Steve Universe I have found hard to get into.
William Nichols Will the early first season of Steven Universe feels formulaic but after you meet lapis is when things really come together (including a lot of things you thought were throw a ways turning out to be really important)
ReplyDeleteOr, alternatively: I can watch Holden be an ass. That sounds better.
ReplyDeleteEspecially if there's weird alien shit. I don't know how far the show has gotten! weird alien shit?
I looooovvvvveeee miraculous ladybug, but it's quite silly. We just watched new legends of monkey and rather liked it, though also fluffier than the other suggestions you've been getting.
ReplyDeleteI did not enjoy the first episode of lost in space. Jonathon Strange and Mr Norell is quite good. I wish I could watch the expanse and runaways, but don't have either.
Oh, i'm surprised you haven't already watched the Expanse.
ReplyDeleteSo, I think this weekend will be characterized by:
ReplyDelete- Running
- The Expanse
- Nerdly chores (it's in a week! I'm running it! omg!)
- A few applications out the door (not having any fun)
THE EXPANSE YES YES
