Artificial, augmented intelligence exists and runs the world, yall.

There are very powerful and deep intelligence in this world. They may not be conscious of themselves, but parts of them are.

They get us up in the morning, shape where we can go, what we eat, how our elections run. They build our houses, pave our streets, and fight our wars.

And it's got a paperclip problem -- that is, it is set up to maximize on one thing.

Generally, that one thing is quarterly profits.

There are others, which maximize for different things. Often, these maximize regulation on the former, controlling them like you do your organs.

  5. It's still better to maximize profit from you by using you as a producer-consumer engine. For now.

  8. You almost make me feel good about the fact that I've been economically inactive since 2008.

  9. Yes, and... I feel like the hyperbolic myth of capitalism’s pervasiveness may be part of capitalism’s ad campaign. In much the same way that the devil’s best trick was convincing people he doesn’t exist, capitalism’s best trick is convincing people no other system is running on an adjacent track.

  10. Tony Lower-Basch Indeed! I had difficulty thinking of what other ones are maximizing on!

  11. William Nichols Is just a bullshit government catchphrase for people who don't have a job and therefore aren't adding to the economy. It's doesn't make any sense because it's not like I'm not out spending money on food, diesel, games and mobile phone contacts just like everybody else.

  12. As a member of a spectator democracy you choose your addiction... Love, hate, blood, lust. Don't think of it as manufactured concent, think of it as the candy everybody wants.

  15. To avoid further confusion, the full situation is that after our first child was born my wife became disabled, which lead to me losing my job because I was taking too much time off work to look after her and the baby. That was 2008. in 2009 she took redundancy and couldn't find another job so the two of us had to get by on various UK government benefits. We decided that the best way out of this situation was for her to go to uni, get a degree and change career, and then after she was back in work and our kids were in school I would go to uni and do the same. So, a long term plan but so far, so good. She got her degree in 2016 an awesome job last year and now I'm almost finished 1st year... Getting there.

  16. There are for sure other of these post-human organizations; scientology (and especially the sea org) is one, and seems to maximize something other than short term quarterly profits.
