This may be the greatest thing I've ever read:
It does us no favors to imagine that we can ever become immune to darkness. Fear, hatred, and jealousy will always come back for us, and we will always, sometimes, fail to resist.

Star Wars spoilers in comments.

  1. Luke Skywalker would never stop fighting and toss away his light saber.

  2. That's a gif from Return of the Jedi, from when Luke Skywalker stopped fighting Darth Vader and tossed away his light saber.

  3. Yes, I recognized it. For sure. I am not sure I could be me and not recognize it.

Want I mean is: Can you explain the context around your comment? I do not understand why you have juxtaposed an obvious false statement with a gif from RotJ.

  4. I was trying to do an ironic commentary on the sort of complaint fans make about Johnson's characterization of Luke Skywalker.

For example, his number one "fan" has said: "I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference, but, it’s not my story anymore."

And of course, TLJ haters in fandom latched onto that.

  5. I think that dude doesn't know the difference between "fan" and "troll". He's been a problem for, what, almost two decades?

  6. Oh, I guess Mark Hamill is actually Luke Skywalker's number two fan. (I think you're talking about George Lucas?)

And the way he says it, it's a bit confusing because it's not like it was ever Hamill's story to begin with.

But in any case, I get it. He has fully embraced his role and cultural place in society. Like Carrie, he has accepted being merged with his Star Wars character. So he's got a lot of emotional investment in Luke Skywalker and he wants Luke to be heroic. Bearing in mind that Carrie got to be heroic and she basically got everything she wanted for her character.

(Not a completely fair comparison, since unlike Mark, Carrie has had a career as a writer and script fixer; Mark Hamill's gone on to a voice acting career rather than a writer. So, in Carrie's place as a writer she had a more collaborative role in crafting the story than Mark did.)

  7. Yeah, sorry, I didn't know the quote and assumed it was Lucas.

Agreed, it's bullshit that Luke would never toss lightsaber. That's just silly.
