I'm looking to dedicate a bag to overnight work trips. A change of clothes, room for work laptop. Potentially a second change of clothes.
Anyone have a favorite bag to recommend?

Many, many excellent options in this space, with the main limiter being how much you want to spend. Biggest danger is that a lot of carry-on/travel backpacks are really more for the "I want to travel 1 week on one bag" use case, and will probably be too huge for your needs.
ReplyDeleteSo with that in mind, I would start with this article: thewirecutter.com - The Best Carry-On Travel Bags
(and don't overlook the link for the Amazon basics option. Also,t he Osprey porter 30 is a decent thing in this space)
With the caveat that those are really all travel-focused. I'm not sure how well those would work for EDC.
One interesting company to look at is AER - https://www.aersf.com/travel-collection/ they do some interesting combination packs designed for travel or the gym. I have one of their Fit packs (so I can pack gym clothes and go to work) and I suspect it would work very well for travel.
The Timbuk2 Travel uptown is good and worth mentioning because apparently bags is having a flash sale on it - https://www.ebags.com/product/timbuk2/uptown-travel-backpack/288752?productid=10372957
Beyond that, the general thing you'll want is a bag where the main compartment opens all the way - top loaders are great for work, but less good for travel, since they suck for packing and unpacking.

ReplyDeleteI have a beckel canvas war bag, which I love dearly.
ReplyDeleteI got this one... duluthpack.com - Boot Duffel | Made in USA | Guaranteed For Life | Duluth Pack I use it every day for work... Its very very sturdy and has the added advantage of having the bottom lower compartment waterproofed, so you could put dirty shoes/ clothes in it. Id still get a laptop sleeve. But its perfect for a couple of changes of clothes and a computer.
ReplyDeleteSkybag (I think that's what it's called) It's the one that rolls up. It carries just enough for an overnight and looks like a really fat quiver. If the names wrong, I'll ping you later.
ReplyDeleteThey are pricy (but made in usa and have lifetime warrantees) but I am still a big fan of the GoRuck backpacks. They are just so damn easy to pack into.
ReplyDeletePricey is the word for some of these.
ReplyDeleteI may go with a simple packing cube or two.
I do still need a replacement laptop bag, but backpacks aren't a solution I want. On metro, there's always "that guy", right? That guy who takes up more space, makes others feel uncomfortable, and is generally unaware of his surroundings?
Yeah. That guy is typified by backpack guy, who routinely runs into other people because backpack guy doesn't know how deep he is. Backpacks and me aren't on good terms.
A number of them are designed to swap between backpack and either briefcase or messenger bag position for just this reason. If you need to haul over distance (like from one gate to another at an airport) backpack is a lifesaver, and you can switch modes when you’re someplace stationary.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if price is no object, yes, GoRuck is the right answer. But if I were buying on a budget, I would probably gravitate towards this one:
ebags.com - J World New York Station Convertible Laptop Travel Backpack - eBags.com
The price is good, the styling is quite nice, it’s designed for travel (big main compartment with full access) but also has laptop and component space. Clearly convertible design. Only downside is that I do not know the brand at all. I’m sure it’s fine, but I can’t guarantee it’s amazing.
https://www.skyroll.com/ That's the bagi a referring to. I got mine on eBay for $75. It works great.
ReplyDeleteskyroll.com - SkyRoll Luggage | Roll-up Carry-on Suit Carrier for Travel
I have something similar to the skyroll and I love it, but it is definitely dedicated luggage.
ReplyDeleteI pulled the trigger with:
ReplyDelete-- Amazon basics 4-piece luggage cubes
-- amazon basics laptop shoulder bag
-- timbuk2's medium-sized messenger bag, because it doesn't come in large.
I am hopeful the laptop shoulder bag will make it easy to move the laptop from home to work, and that the messenger bag + luggage cubes will make travelling for two or so nights simple.
