Obviously, I believe Ford.
I believe Kavanaugh is part of a culture of rape and abuse. I believe he views women as objects. I think he has used his power and privilege throughout his life for the good of the patriarchy. If I had to place a wager, it'd be firmly on him using his power to have sex with women whose career depend on his good graces. There's a word for that.
I don't think he belongs on the supreme court, or any court. It appears he is a partisan, with a hatred of democrats. That in itself is disqualifying as is, in case there is any doubt, being a rapist.
I also believe Kavanaugh is going to be on the Supreme Court before the mid terms.
When that happens, the last unpoliticized pillar of our Republic falls.

I agree with everything here but that last sentence. That pillar has been politicized forever. And it doesn't fall, just buckles and sags.

ReplyDeleteI do not think this is true. I am a part of this world, and people have quiet reputations, just like everywhere else. I knew what Kozinski was long before it was in the news, for instance. Kavanaugh’s reputation is as a mentor to women and people of color, both liberal and conservative. That is why what has come out about what he did in high school and college is so shocking - and why his responses today are so disappointing.

I’m afraid that fell a long time ago.
I do think the SC is becoming more politicized.
ReplyDeleteTrue enough in the sense that Presidents have gotten better at picking nominees with more predictable partisan commitments. Once people get to the court, it has always been an intensely politicized body, though. That’s just the nature of its work.
ReplyDeleteThe Supreme Court has been highly politicized for as long as I have been aware of such things. The people who've vocally pretended that it isn't are making their own political calculations when doing so.
ReplyDeleteBut in general, I agree with the idea that Kavanaugh is a sexist scumbag who's probably going to end up on the Supreme Court. Because, boy howdy, are GOP members of Congress cramming him through as hard as they can. They're just beyond even pretending anymore.
I'd bet Kavanaugh is not confirmed. So what about Flake? He's a flake. When did he ever NOT flake? Not really news.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about Collins and Murkowski. And I keep coming back to these thoughts:
1) I find it hard to believe that either of them is truly undecided. I find it most plausible that both already know what their ultimate decisions will be.
2) If that decision is to ultimately vote for Kavanaugh, what are they trying to do with all this playing around and making de facto demands? Surely they know just as much as the rest of the Republicans that things will look worse and worse with each passing day.
3) OTOH, if that decision is to ultimately vote against Kavanaugh, then these demands are a way to delay things and maybe even cause Kavanaugh's nomination to implode without them having to actually put a "No" vote in (thus drawing even more ire from Republicans).
Dear god I hope you're right, Isaac.
