It was recently pointed out to me that Trump may keep the government closed for one obvious, and horrendously mistaken, belief.

Namely, the (wrong) belief that he cannot be removed if the government is closed.

That's an even better suggestion that my previous favorite one: That all the parts of the government he cares about are open.

  1. He doesn't actually care about the DoD either, even though we're open.

  2. Sure he does. He needs you to illegally build an immoral wall in violation of considerable US laws, constitution, and treaties.

  3. Ah, yeah, we may be using different definitions of "care" here. I certainly do not feel cared for, individually.

  4. Ironically, the one military service whose job actually involves border and port security are the ones not getting paid.

  5. Indeed: Care in this instance is more akin to "finds useful"

  6. The most daunting prospect is that he may sincerely believe he's holding out for a good cause. This blindly disruptive path may be his debased version of commonwealth.

  7. I don't think Trump thinks much about removal from office. He has never been fired, and he doesn't understand separation of powers or much else about how the government works. Most presidents lose the midterms, and most of the tack to the center and at least make some noise about bipartisanship as a result. I don't think Trump will move toward the center, because he has led a consequence-free life and doesn't know how to win over powerful opponents. He only knows how to crush weak allies.

He won't back down because all he has is his base, and they love this. He's whipping them up. He's good at it, but that's all he knows how to do.
