You guys, I just accidentally did a 5k on a treadmill. 48 minutes.

I've been training for a month, more or less. Back  in September, I dislocated me knee and couldn't walk. This is a big fucking deal.

I'm going to be sore as shit tomorrow, that's for sure. Worth it.

  2. This is great news! I know your leg has given you a lot of grief. So happy for you.

  3. Excellent! When I got back up to speed after breaking a foot (had to use a wheelchair for a while because I'm not strong enough crutches) I was SO happy!

  4. Actually #1 recovery food: protein. Triggers the body to repair muscles. Try to eat 10-20g 30-60 min after a workout. Chocolate milk is a decent option.

  5. Thanks, everyone.

I'm tired this morning. That seems predictable.

  6. oh you may also find this tidbit interesting. you burn more calories going the same distance slower. so when you get your 5k time from 48 min to 30 min, you'll actually burn quite a few less calories for the effort. keep it slow, keep it real. ;-)

  7. Time for individual responses.

    Rowan Cota Thanks!

Whitney Beltrán Yeah, and you more or less had to read about it, too. I'm working on a less ham-handed attempt, surrounding a more relate-able issue.

Noah Stevens ibuprofen for the win. I hadn't had any, and couldn't sleep. Turns out what hurts the most? My arches. I'm betting I run wrong.

Gretchen S. Ouch, a chair. Crutches are at least cheap and still let you do stairs. I remember avoiding escalators, and taking a bus to find a metro station that had a working elevator, rather than trying escalators. Without mass transit, I'm not sure how I would have managed.

Todd Sprang You're full of interesting notions. I think milk might have made me feel ill. I just drank water, took a shower, and went to bed.

  8. you must eat after a workout. if not milk, then a protein bar, or something else with muscle-food. you will not feel so tired the next day if you put fuel back in the tank, so to speak.

  9. Todd Sprang This is probably true, though my tank is pretty full, so to speak.

  11. William Nichols I can't even handle an escalator with a cane.... I can't imagine trying in crutches. But I can only crutch about ten steps before I'm done in, anyhow. I kept them so if I ever can handle more upper body work I can practice with them. They make a good general workout for me....

In general I'm happy enough to be walking again, and I worked on my flexibility and core so I'm stronger than before the break. And balance exercises in hopes that it'll make falling less likely.

  12. Gretchen S. My biggest fear on crutches plus escalator was not being able to get off in time. I am not fast on them, especially from nothing.

    Here's to walking!
