When I say something like "I would fight against the use of that particular arbitrary programming structure", it is not an invitation to school me on why the language that structure is from is sooooo important.

  4. Edit: This was probably not useful. Never mind me.

  5. Technically, you guys, it was online. Some dude told me that something called Fortran is a good thing and that defining variable type by first letter of the variable name is a good idea.

    Like wtf d00d.

  6. I dunno William, I kind of feel like if you throw down a gauntlet, you can't then be offended if the person you threw it at picks it up. You said you wanted to fight over it, and you apparently don't even know the name of the thing you were saying you'd fight over (unless you are being facetious with your comment about "something called Fortran"). Them explaining it to you seems... within the bounds of the situation.

  7. I am, in point of fact, being facetious. I at least kinda know about Fortran.

My attempted interloculoter claimed it was a good thing that Fortran declare variable type based upon the first letter of the variable.

I said that if my shop did anyting like that, I'd fight against it. Which is kinda my job.

He then went on a rant about how important Fortran is because of how old it is.

  8. Okay, then, I agree that's him being a dick. The situation as originally presented was less clear cut to me.

  9. I object to any argument that insists that the statement "I hate this and will fight against it if necessary," is an invitation to debate.

It really is not. It is, in fact, the exact opposite of that. It is saying "I do not want to have any such debate, and will be upset and angry if I am obliged to. Please do not enter into such a debate with me lightly."

I do understand that people use similar structures ironically, precisely to invite debate ("Star Trek presents a more realistic society than Firefly ... fight me!") But the fact that people sometimes say things ironically does not imply that everything is irony.

  10. William Nichols I work on Fortran90 at my job-job. Please kindly tell him to die in a fire.

  11. My first coding job involved porting fortran77 code to fortran95. There is nothing worth saving from that language that isn't still around...
